Fortress - Sinjski grad

Archaeological excavations were initiated by the end of 1998 along the route of the construction of the road towards the Sinj Fortress. Several sites were explored along the afore-mentioned route, including the most extensive one in the area of Korlat, i.e. the outer part of the Tortress’ courtyard.

The activities focused on the most recent part of the Fortress that was built during the 17th and the first half of the 18th century. There parts of the western and northern defence wall with traces of wooden palisades were discovered. Inside the Korlat, the cleaning and excavation of structures was started, which had been heavily damaged by machinery during the earlier road construction. Some walls were even completely torn down. The structures date back to the time when the Venetians reconstructed the Fortress. This fact is verified by the find of copper coins with the value of 2 soldi that Venice mint during the 18th century for Dalmatia and Albania.

At this occasion, the vegetation around the western wall with the main gate into the fortress was removed.

Besides the activities at Korlat, archaeological excavations were conducted also at certain locations at the foot of the fortress, which were planned at the future Way of the Cross. Clearance of the area at the First Station and the half-decayed house that will be reconstructed and turned into a souvenir shop was started. Archaeological trial trenches (dimension 6 x 2 m) were excavated at the Third Station, but those works have not been concluded yet. The trial trenches of the same size that are close to the future Sixth Station gave negative results.
