Prozor is a mediaeval fortress that is located above Vrlika and dates to the end of the 14th or the beginning of the 15th century. It was rebuilt and altered several times throughout its existence. The reconstruction and exploration of the fortress started at the end of the 1980s and lasted until 1991, when the works were terminated by the war and the occupation of the Vrlika region.

In 2006, research activities and the reconstruction of the site were restarted. The Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments conducted two campaigns of archaeological research during 2007 (from June 18th to July 6th and from September 9th to October 12th), which were financed by the town of Vrlika and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.

The excavations encompassed the area east of the fortress entrance (the so-called Kvartir) and the area just in front of this entrance. Remains which are assumed to be part of the staircase substructure that led to the inside of the fortress were discernible in front of the entrance. After cleaning the wider area around the newly built staircase, stone structures became visible that were aligned in rows and poorly bonded with plaster. The inner parts were filled with small gravel, while the front of each step was made out of larger stones. The documentation was compiled after the cleaning and included photographs. The cleaning begun in the room called Kvartir, which was entirely overgrown and covered by scattered stones that had fallen off from the surrounding walls. During these interventions, walls were discovered that separated the rooms in the basement level of the Kvartir. Flooring of round stone that was placed in the ground without binding material was found in the south-eastern part, as well as a rectangular pillar made of bricks that carried the structure which led down from the entrance of the Kvartir to the flooring level. A room was discovered in the south-western part of the Kvartir, which was defined as a walking space above which also a layer of collapsed ceiling existed that still contained parts of beams and nails. The exploration of this fortress part will be continued after the reconstruction of the walls of the revealed room.
